You might want to extend your stay for a day or two to indulge in activities like river rafting or visiting sacred sites like the Triveni Ghat, known for its enchanting evening aarti.

The road trip starts along the pleasing Badrinath Road. The journey is long, but filled with captivating landscapes and cultural landmarks, making the 9-10 hour drive to Pipalkoti an enriching experience. You will also notice how the Alaknanda River character transforms, starting as a serene flow but becoming increasingly wild and powerful as we climb higher into the Himalayas. The sights are truly spellbinding, with the river carving through the valley and towering peaks lining the horizon.

You will also pass by the four Prayags, holy confluences of the Ganga’s tributaries. These include Devaprayag, where the Alaknanda meets the Bhagirathi to form the Ganga; Rudraprayag, where the Mandakini joins; Karnaprayag, where the Pindar River merges; Nandaprayag with the Nandakini. All these four sacred confluences that are not only picturesque but also hold deep spiritual significance in Hindu mythology.

While the journey may be long, the constantly changing views of rivers, mountains, and valleys will keep you engaged. Be ready to capture these scenic moments, as they are some of the most beautiful sights you’ll see before reaching your destination. You will arrive at Pipalkoti around 5:00 pm, where you will be welcomed with tea, followed by a trek briefing and dinner. Accommodation will be arranged at a guest house, and if you need to connect with family or friends, telephone networks are available in the area.

After an early breakfast at Pipalkoti, the journey begins with a picturesque 2-3 hour drive to Tugasi village, situated at 2,450m. The rocky and winding roads provide great views of the Garhwal landscape, setting the stage for the adventure ahead. Tugasi is the starting point of your trek, and from here, the trail provides a mix of steep and gradual ascents, mostly cutting through charming mountain villages.

The initial part of the trek takes you through agricultural lands with terraced farms, a typical feature of the region. While greenery may not be abundant, the panoramic views of the Garhwal frontier more than compensate. As you climb, look out for the Dhauli-Ganga River glistening far below and the Vishnugad-Tapovan Hydroelectric Power Station in the distance.

The ascent becomes steeper as you leave behind the terraced farms and move higher up the trail. Soon, you’ll encounter the stunning sight of Dronagiri peak, which appears hauntingly beautiful in the distance, creating an almost magical feeling. The rugged terrain transforms into an open meadow as we arrive at Gulling Top, where we will set up camp for the night

The Gulling campsite shows the surrounding peaks, with Dronagiri, Hathi Parvat, and Gauri Parbat, Brahmal Peak dominating the horizon. The evening is nothing short of magical, with the sun casting a golden hue over the landscape as it sets behind the mountains. The serenity of the oak forests around the meadow adds to the charm of this place.

Gulling Top to Tali Forest Camp

  • Altitude: 3,350m (11,100ft)
  • Trek Distance: 5 km | 4-5 hours
  • Altitude Gain: 600m (2,100ft)
  • Accommodation: Tent
  • Peaks Spotted:Nanda Devi, Kalanka, Chang Bang, Dronagiri, Hathi Parvat, Gauri Parbat

Waking up to the pleasing views of Dronagiri Peak at Gulling Top, you’ll prepare for a day of trekking deeper into the serene forests of Tali. This 5-hour trek will be more relaxed compared to the previous day, providing you to enjoy the journey at a leisurely pace. The trail gradually ascends with gentle gradients, making it an easier but equally scenic hike.

About 20 minutes into the trek, you’ll reach a beautiful green clearing. From here, you can take in stunning panoramic views of the mighty snow-clad peaks, including Nanda Devi, Kalanka, Chang Bang, and Hathi Parvat, Gauri Parvat. After soaking in the views, you’ll continue trekking through a stream, which marks the entrance to the dense forests.

The trek leads you into a mixed forest thick with oak, rhododendron, and walnut trees. If you're trekking in late March or early April, you may catch the pink and white rhododendron blossoms, adding a splash of colour to the forest. In winter, the forest transforms into a snow-covered wonderland, where the interplay of light and shadow through the towering conifers creates a magical atmosphere.

As you trek further, you’ll get glimpses of the Hathi and Gauri Parbat peaks, their snow-covered front glistening in the sun. Dronagiri, which had been a constant companion on the trail, now appears from a different angle, revealing new facets of its majestic beauty.

Arriving at Tali Forest Camp, situated in the thick of these ancient woods, you’ll set up camp for the night. Surrounded by the towering trees and distant snow-capped peaks, it’s the perfect place to relax and enjoy the natural splendour of the Himalayas. You’ll fall asleep to the quiet rustle of the forest, looking forward to the even grander vistas that await the next day.

Tali forest camp to Kuari pass and back via Khullara top

  • Altitude:
    • Khulara Top: 3,650m (12,000 ft)
    • Kuari Pass: 3,900 m/ 12,750 ft
  • Trek Distance: 10-11 km | 8-9 hours
  • Accommodation: Tent
  • Peaks Spotted: Chaukhamba, Balakun, Neel Kantha, Mukut Parvat, Kamet, Abhi Gamin, Mana I, Gauri Parbat, Hathi Parvat, Dronagiri, Kalanka, Chang Bang, Nanda Devi, Nanda Ghunti, Pangarchulla Peak

This is the summit day of the Kuari Pass trek and the toughest challenge of the journey. Prepare for a long, strenuous 8-9 hour trek that will take you through some of the most breathtaking terrain and panoramic views the Garhwal region has to offer. You’ll need to carry sufficient water today, as there are no water sources along the route.

After trekking 2 kilometers from Tali Forest, you’ll reach Jhandi Top. A perfect spot for a well-deserved rest. Known for its stunning surroundings and panoramic views, Jhandi Top is where trekkers often take a long break. It also serves as a convenient stopping point for those who may not be willing to trek further.

From Jhandi Top, the trail becomes moderately steep and gradually opening to views of snow-capped Himalayan peaks. After another 1km, you’ll arrive at Khullara Top, where a vast, open landscape unveils an array of towering peaks. It’s the perfect spot to pause and soak in the awe-inspiring scenery. Lunch is typically carried along and can be enjoyed either en route.

The next section involves a traverse walk to a frozen stream near a broken bridge at 3,750m. This 1.5 km section is challenging but offers stunning scenery. From here, the real test begins, a strenuous 1 km climb to Kuari Pass itself. This is the most demanding part of the trek, especially when covered in snow. You’ll feel the altitude as you ascend, and frequent short breaks will help manage the exertion.

As you approach the Kuari Pass, the view opens up to a panorama of majestic Himalayan peaks. A sight that will make all the effort worthwhile. The Kedarnath Peak, Chaukhamba, Neelkantha, and Nanda Devi are among the many towering summits that will surround you.

Also, it is important to be equipped with crampons and gaiters. TTH provides all the necessary gear to handle the snow and ensure a safe, memorable trek.

Tali forest camp - Pipalkoti via Gurson bugyal (11150 ft) and Auli (9680 ft)

  • Altitude:
    • Tali Lake: 3,550m (11,500ft)
    • Gurson Bugyal: 3,400m (11,150ft)
    • Auli: 2900m (9500ft)
  • Trek Distance: 9 km | 6-7 hours
  • Accommodation: Guest house
  • Drive Distance: 45 km | 1 hr 30 min

After a final breakfast at the Tali campsite, you’ll embark on the last stretch of your trek, which takes you through some of the most scenic landscapes of the journey. Starting from Tali Lake, a short 1 km walk will lead you to this high-altitude alpine lake gem nestled at an elevation of 3,550m. The lake is often frozen in winter, creating a tranquil and ethereal ambiance as the surrounding peaks reflect off its surface.

The next part of your adventure is a 3.5 km trek to Gurson Bugyal. This high-altitude meadow is one of the most picturesque stretches of the entire Kuari Pass trek. Sprawling snow-covered pastures greet you as you step into Gurson Bugyal, a vast open space, famous for its panoramic views of snow-clad mountains. The Bugyal (meadow) is an ideal spot for a brief stop to take in the beauty around you, surrounded by towering peaks like Nanda Devi, and Dronagiri.

From here, you will begin the descent to Auli, the famed skiing destination of India, via a 4.5 km gradual trek. The walk through the Gorson Bugyal to Auli is gentle and pleasant, far from the steeper ascents encountered earlier in the trek. Auli, at 2900m, offers stunning vistas of snow-blanketed slopes, making it a paradise for adventure lovers. In winter, Auli transforms into one of the most popular ski resorts, drawing visitors from all over the world. The landscape is equally beautiful in the thawing months of February and March when the snow begins to melt, and skiing becomes a major activity here.

Upon reaching Auli, trekkers have the option to take a cable car ride (at their own expense) to enjoy the scenery from a bird’s-eye view. The cable car ride provides panoramic vistas of the slopes, pine forests, and the distant snow-capped peaks.

After your trek concludes in Auli, a vehicle will pick you up for a 45 km drive back to Pipalkoti. The drive will take around 1 hour and 30 minutes. At Pipalkoti, you will be greeted with evening tea, and the day will end with a debriefing session followed by dinner, and a chance to unwind and share stories of your trek before you head back.

Pipalkoti To Rishikesh

  • Drive Distance: 220 km | approx. 9 hours

The last day of your Kuari Pass trek begins with an early start from Pipalkoti. After days of trekking through the Himalayan wilderness, this day will be a full return to the road, taking you back to the holy city of Rishikesh. The drive, although long and stretching about 9 hours, offers its own kind of serene beauty. You’ll travel through the same beautiful landscapes that you encountered on your journey up.

The ride from Pipalkoti back to Rishikesh is a winding descent through the Garhwal Himalayas. The route follows the fabled Badrinath Road, a major highway that connects pilgrims and adventurers to the sacred sites of Uttarakhand. Along the way, you’ll pass through villages and small towns nestled in the foothills, catching glimpses of daily life in the mountains.

On this journey, you’ll once again encounter the four sacred river confluences that make this route famous. Keep an eye out for Devprayag, the point where the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda Rivers merge to form the holy Ganga, a sight that holds immense spiritual significance. The views of these river valleys are breathtaking, with emerald green waters winding through deep gorges, surrounded by lush forests and towering mountains.

Breakfast and lunch will be enjoyed en route at a roadside inn (exclusive of charges). Stretch your legs and take in the fresh mountain air one last time.

As you approach Rishikesh, the landscape gradually transforms from rugged mountains to verdant hills and finally to the bustling, spiritual atmosphere of the town. Known as the Yoga Capital of the World, Rishikesh marks the end to your trek, with its peaceful riverside ghats, temples, and ashrams. If you’ve built in extra time, you might enjoy a peaceful evening by the river or a visit to the Ram Jhula or Lakshman Jhula bridges.

You’ll reach Rishikesh between 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm. It’s recommended to book your transportation out of Rishikesh for after 10 pm, allowing enough buffer time in case of delays.

This journey back is not just a physical return but also a time to process the experiences and memories you’ve gathered during your trek. The Himalayas have a way of leaving an impression that stays with you long after you’ve returned to the everyday world.
