The Mt. Black Peak Expedition (also known as Kalanag) is a challenging high-altitude mountaineering trek located in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, India. Standing at 6,387 meters, it is a technical climb that requires prior mountaineering experience and physical fitness. The expedition includes glacier crossings, rock climbing, and navigating snow-covered terrain. The journey begins from Sankri and takes trekkers to the Black Peak Base Camp (4,000 m), followed by acclimatization and summit attempts. The summit day involves an early start and a demanding ascent, with panoramic views of the Gangotri Range, Swargarohini, and Banderpunch peaks. This expedition offers a perfect blend of technical challenges, adventure, and Himalayan beauty. Best undertaken between May and October, it is a must-do for avid trekkers and mountaineers seeking an unforgettable Himalayan experience.

Day 1 : Make your way to Sankri (1,920M)

Day 2 : Sankri (1,920M) to Seema (2,260M) through Taluka (2,100M)

Day 3 : Seema (2,260M) to Ruinsara Tal (3,500M)

Day 4 : Ruinsara Tal (3,500M) to Kyarkoti Base Camp (3,820M)

Day 5 : Rest and Acclimatization at Basecamp (3,820M)

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1

Make your way to Sankri (1,920M)

Distance: 185 kms

Duration: 8-9 hours

If you have opted for transport with NK Adventure, we assemble early in the morning and begin our drive to Sankri, a trekking hub in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand.

The journey passes through scenic mountain roads, forests, and villages, offering a mix of lively towns and peaceful landscapes.

We aim to reach before evening to allow proper rest and avoid delays caused by unpredictable mountain conditions.

Sankri serves as the starting point for many popular treks and offers basic facilities for trekkers.


Day 2

Sankri (1,920M) to Seema (2,260M) through Taluka (2,100M)

Distance: 12 kms drive + 10-12 kms trek

Duration: 3 hours drive + 5-6 hours trek

We begin early and drive to Taluka via a rough mountain road. From Taluka, the trek begins towards Seema.

The trail passes through forests and scenic landscapes with gradual altitude gain.

Expect to reach the campsite by evening after a long but rewarding day.


Day 3

Seema (2,260M) to Ruinsara Tal (3,500M)

Distance: 14 kms

Duration: 7-8 hours

We trek towards Ruinsara Tal, a beautiful high-altitude lake considered sacred by locals.

The trail offers scenic views and gradually leads to the campsite near the lake.


Day 4

Ruinsara Tal (3,500M) to Kyarkoti Base Camp (3,820M)

Distance: 7 kms

Duration: 5-6 hours

The trek continues towards Kyarkoti Base Camp with views of surrounding peaks including Black Peak.


Day 5

Rest and Acclimatization at Basecamp (3,820M)

This day is reserved for acclimatization, gear setup, and technical training on snow and ice.


Day 6 – Day 14

Expedition

High-altitude conditions require flexible planning, so schedules may vary.

The expedition involves multiple camps including Advanced Base Camp, Camp 1, and Summit Camp.

Rotation climbs, acclimatization, and summit attempts are carried out based on weather conditions.

After summit attempts, the team descends back through the same route towards Sankri.


Day 15

Depart from Sankri (1,920M)

The expedition concludes with a celebration of the successful journey. It is advisable to keep buffer days before onward travel.


Day 16

Reserve Day

This day is kept as contingency in case of bad weather or unforeseen delays.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mt. Black Peak is recommended only for experienced trekkers who have completed at least one 6000m category trek or equivalent high-altitude expedition.

If you can run 5 km in 25–30 minutes, you are ready. Practice running 10 km once a week to build endurance. Add strength training like squats, lunges and push-ups.

With consistent training, these standards can be achieved within a few months.

The climb demands mountaineering skills including ice-axe usage, tent pitching in snow, roping up, ascending and descending steep gradients, abseiling and handling technical equipment.

Minimum age is 16 years (16–17 must be accompanied by a guardian). Participants above 60 must carry a medical fitness certificate.

Mt. Black Peak (Kalanag) is located in the Garhwal Himalayas in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. It is part of the Bandarpunch massif in the Western Garhwal region.

Black Peak is the highest mountain in the Saraswati Range, located in Ruinsara Valley. The route passes through Govind National Park, alpine meadows, pine forests, moraines, glaciers and snowfields.

The expedition includes glacier crossings, crevassed snowfields, rocky moraines and high-altitude conditions. The summit push includes a 75 ft vertical ice wall with a steep gradient.

Twin-sharing tents during the trek. Higher camps may use 4-person expedition tents due to limited space.

Yes. Black Peak is a technical expedition requiring glacier travel skills and mountaineering equipment knowledge.

The expedition begins from Sankri village. Public buses and shared jeeps operate from Dehradun to Sankri. Pickup from ISBT Dehradun at 7:00 AM can be arranged.

Limited network in Sankri (BSNL/JIO). No reception beyond Sankri.

Last reliable ATM is at Purola.

Expected arrival in Dehradun is late evening on the final day.

All common camping gear and technical climbing equipment including snow boots, crampons, gaiters, ice axe, helmet and harness are provided.

You can rent trekking shoes, trekking poles, fleece jackets and rucksacks.

Rented equipment is distributed during the briefing in Sankri.

Payment & Cancellation Policy:

When you have firmly decided to undertake the Tour with New Knight Adventure, you will need to book the trip with us. We must allocate enough time to prepare, obtain necessary documents and permits, and book hotels and Transport for the trip.
25% advance during the time of booking for confirmation
50% Amount one month prior of arrival in India
25% Amount to be one week prior of arrival in India

 

Cancellation Policy:

• If the cancellation is made 30 days before the tour starts, 25% of the full payment will be deducted and 75% will be refunded.
• If the cancellation is made 20 days before the tour start, 35% of the full payment will be deducted and 65% will be refunded
• If the cancellation is made 10 days before the tour start, 80% will be deducted and 20% will be refunded.
• No refund is made if the trip is cancelled after the departure for Expedition.
• No refund is made during the running tour.
• The cost of travel permit or any other documentation charges will not be refundable
