Mt. Nanda Ghunti (6309 M) otherwise known as the “Veil of Goddess Nanda Devi” is a peak in the Garhwal Himalayas lying in the Nanda Devi National Park. You will get a glimpse of this mighty peak from the famous Roopkund trail along with the mighty trident shaped Trishul massif. Mt. Nanda Ghunti has attracted serious mountaineering enthusiasts looking for a challenge. In spite of not being technically difficult, the mountain is infamous for its unpredictable weather conditions and crevasses en route to the summit. The summit gives you unimaginably gorgeous views of Mt. Trishul, Chaukhamba massif, Kamet, Nanda Devi, Dronagiri and many more. Starting from the famous Roopkund trail, the trail deviates to Homkund which is the base camp of the trek. Mt. Nanda Ghunti expedition is meant only for experienced trekkers and aspiring mountaineers with high fitness level and prior knowledge of roping up procedures and the use of jumars and crampons. The best season to undertake this expedition is June and September to early-October. The approach to the summit is from the eastern ridge crisscrossing glaciers and moraines. Day 1 : Dehradun to Sutol – 250 km Drive

Day 2 : Rest day in Sutol

Day 3 : Sutol (7875 FT) to Lata Khopri (9679 FT) – 8 km trek.

Day 4 : Lata Khopri to Homkund/Base Camp (13,450 FT) – 8 km trek

Day 5 : Acclimatization Day at Base Camp

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1

Dehradun to Sutol – 250 km Drive

The entire expedition team will meet us today morning by 6:30-7:00am and we drive to Sutol Village which is around 250km from Dehradun. We will reach Sutol by evening.

Overnight in a homestay.

We will meet and assemble in Dehradun where there will be an introduction and briefing session. All the equipment needed in the expedition will be checked and finalized.

We will rest for the night in hotel/guesthouse.


Day 2

Rest day in Sutol

Today we will rest in Sutol where there will be an introduction and briefing session. We will also prepare for the expedition in terms of equipment and permits.

Overnight in homestay.


Day 3

Sutol (7875 FT) to Lata Khopri (9679 FT) – 8 km trek.

Today we start our trek to Lata Khopri leaving behind Sutol. The trek to Lata Khopri will take about 5-6 hours with a series of ascents and descents just like any other forest trek.

We will reach Lata Khopri and pitch tents here for the night. Have dinner and retire for the night.


Day 4

Lata Khopri to Homkund/Base Camp (13,450 FT) – 8 km trek

Today we will move forward from Lata Khopri to Homkund which will be our base camp. The glacial lake of Homkund is well known because of its popularity owing to the Nanda Devi Raj Yatra that happens once in 12 years.

The first half of the trail is through a forest followed by the trail opening up to alpine meadows. With an initial gradual trek there is a steep incline during the last 2km of the trail before reaching the base camp.

We will pitch tents here and retire for the night.


Day 5

Acclimatization Day at Base Camp

Today we will rest at the base camp and let our bodies acclimatize properly and prepare for the upcoming days.


Day 6

Base Camp to Advanced Base Camp (15,092 FT) and back to Base Camp

Today we load ferry from base camp to ABC and return to Base camp where we retire for the night.


Day 7

Base camp to ABC (15,092 FT)

Today we will shift to the ABC and spend the night here allowing our body to acclimatize.

Overnight in tents.


Day 8

ABC to Camp 1 (18,373 FT) and back to ABC

Today we load ferry from ABC to camp 1 and return back to ABC where we retire for the night.


Day 9

ABC to Camp 1 (18,373 FT)

Today we move ahead to Camp 1 and rest for the night. Let your body acclimatize to the high altitudes.

Overnight in tents.


Day 10

Camp 1 to Summit Camp (19,357 FT) and back to Camp 1

Today we load ferry from Camp 1 to summit camp and return to camp 1 to rest for the night.


Day 11

Camp 1 to Summit Camp (19,357 FT)

We will move ahead and establish Summit Camp. We will also fix ropes wherever needed and prepare for the next day’s summit push.

Overnight in tents.


Day 12

Summit Camp to Summit (20,699 FT) and back to Camp 1

Today we will push for the summit between 2-3 am. The gradient of slope at some sections is about 65 degrees with crevasses en route. This is where the fixed ropes are imperative.

Upon reaching the summit you will be able to witness the magnificence of the surrounding peaks like Trishul, Bertoli, Chaukhamba, Kamet, Nanda Devi and plenty more. Definitely awe-inspiring and worth every sweat.

Cherish the moment and descend down to camp 1 where we camp for the night.


Day 13

Camp 1 to Base Camp/Homkund

We will retrace our steps and make our way down to the base camp where we will rest for the night.

Overnight in tents.


Day 14

Base Camp to Sutol

We will retrace our steps and end our magnificent expedition at the village of Sutol.

Overnight in home stay.


Day 15

Sutol to Dehradun – 250 km drive.

We will leave early and drive to Dehradun where we bid you goodbye.


Day 16

Reserve Day

Reserve a day for summit climb if the weather does not allow you to summit the day before.

FAQs

Mt. Nanda Ghunti is recommended only for experienced trekkers who have prior high-altitude experience and basic mountaineering exposure.

If you can run 5 km in 25–30 minutes, you are ready to take on this trek. Practice running 10 km once a week to build endurance. Add resistance workouts like squats, lunges and push-ups.

With structured training for a few months, you can meet the required fitness standards.

The climb requires basic mountaineering skills such as using an ice-axe, roping up, ascending and descending steep gradients, gear-assisted ascent, abseiling and handling technical climbing equipment.

Minimum age is 16 years. Participants between 16–17 must be accompanied by a guardian. Above 60 requires medical fitness certification.

Mt. Nanda Ghunti (6,309 m) is located in the Garhwal Himalayas within Nanda Devi National Park, Uttarakhand. The base camp lies near Homkund, branching from the Roopkund trail.

The trail passes through alpine meadows, dense forests and glacial landscapes. The summit offers panoramic views of Trishul, Chaukhamba, Kamet, Nanda Devi, Dronagiri and surrounding Himalayan peaks.

The expedition includes glacier crossings, crevassed snowfields, unpredictable weather and high-altitude exposure. It should only be attempted by experienced trekkers.

Yes. Knowledge of crampons, jumars, roping techniques and survival skills at high altitude is required.

The trek starts from Sutol village, approximately 250 km from Dehradun. Pickup is from ISBT Dehradun early morning.

Limited connectivity after Dehradun. Expect no network at higher camps.

ATMs are available in Dehradun.

Tents, sleeping bags, mattresses and technical gear including crampons, gaiters, ice axe, helmet and harness are provided.

Trekking shoes, poles, fleece jackets and rucksacks can be rented on request.

Three vegetarian meals daily with evening snacks and tea. Eggs provided on select days. Higher camps receive ready-to-eat meals.

Dry toilet pits with toilet tents at campsites. Above base camp, toilet tents may not be available.

First aid kits, oxygen cylinders and HAPO bag are carried for emergencies.

ID proof and medical certificate are mandatory. Originals must be carried during the trek.

High-altitude rescue and evacuation insurance is strongly recommended.

Yes. NK Adventure ensures a safe, inclusive and gender-sensitive trekking environment.

Road rescue is activated where leaders escort the participant to the nearest medical facility. Rescue costs are borne by the participant unless covered by insurance.

Payment & Cancellation Policy:

When you have firmly decided to undertake the Tour with New Knight Adventure, you will need to book the trip with us. We must allocate enough time to prepare, obtain necessary documents and permits, and book hotels and Transport for the trip.
25% advance during the time of booking for confirmation
50% Amount one month prior of arrival in India
25% Amount to be one week prior of arrival in India

 

Cancellation Policy:

• If the cancellation is made 30 days before the tour starts, 25% of the full payment will be deducted and 75% will be refunded.
• If the cancellation is made 20 days before the tour start, 35% of the full payment will be deducted and 65% will be refunded
• If the cancellation is made 10 days before the tour start, 80% will be deducted and 20% will be refunded.
• No refund is made if the trip is cancelled after the departure for Expedition.
• No refund is made during the running tour.
• The cost of travel permit or any other documentation charges will not be refundable
